Tuesday 25th July

Attendees:
Huw Morris
Ralph Grimble
Simon Mawdsley
Adrian Barnard
Simon Long
Simon Canter

Simon M was joining us for the first time, and Simon C for only the second.

We decided to split into two groups of three:
Huw, Ralph and Simon M played Age of Steam (basic map) while Adrian, Simon L and Simon C played Puerto Rico.

Age of Steam:
Ralph and me are experienced players of Age of Steam, while Simon M had never played before. We played the basic map, which is a tad easy for 3 players, in my opinion. Simon started and grabbed the middle of the board, Ralph grabbed the east, and I had the west. As Simon encroached into my territory, Ralph had the entire eastern side of the board to himself. I decided I had to get over there and challenge him, otherwise Ralph would score an easy win. This compromised my position slightly, and helped Simon greatly. In the end, I fell away as the long shipments dried up. Ralph did well, but I had done just enough to disrupt him in the east. Neither of us could do anything about Simon shipping for 12 towards the end of the game, and Simon beat Ralph by 2 points. I was some way further back. I'd given Simon too much slack in trying to fight Ralph, and Simon was good enough at picking it up to take advantage.

Puerto Rico
This was Simon Canter's first play. Simon Long has played it a few times, while Adrian has played a lot of it. Apparently Adrian won, with Simon L in second. Probably just as you'd expect, based on experience. :-)
